Colleges considering holistic SSTs often wonder where to start. This guide provides actionable insights, based on the experiences of over 80 practitioners at nine institutions around the country. We spoke with a wide array of individuals, including frontline advisors and counselors, directors, instructional faculty, institutional researchers, equity program professionals, and vice presidents.

We firmly believe that reform efforts as large as holistic support redesigns are not easy, linear, or quick. This guide does not pretend otherwise. In it, you’ll find a description of different types of SSTs for holistic support, and the phases colleges go through to design and implement them. You’ll also find deep-dives into critical things to think about, plan for, and problem solve around when engaged in SST reform on your own campus. Throughout, we provide ideas and tactics that can ease the design and implementation process.
