INSTITUTIONAL TRANSFORMATION OVER THE LONG-TERM

LESSONS FROM THE HSS IMPLEMENTATION NETWORK

Institutional transformation is challenging in any industry, but in higher education, it can often feel nearly impossible. This paper describes the hard-earned but impactful progress HSS Implementation Network colleges made over their fifteen-month network experience. It demonstrates that transformation builds through a series of intentional, interconnected efforts. It demonstrates that when practitioners are provided with time, space, and guidance, they can effectively engage in collaborative problem-solving and develop adaptive strategies to advance their work.

The insights in this document are based on our previous study on Student Success Teams and our work with the Holistic Student Support (HSS) Implementation Network, a group of mid-level leaders from five California community colleges engaged in HSS redesign, facilitated by Phase Two Advisory and The Ada Center and funded by College Futures Foundation.
